A Clinical Study on Esophageal Varices in Liver Cirrhosis

Abstract
Since January 1974 until February 1975 at this endoscol~y room of Kyungpook National University Hospital, esophagofiberscopic examination was done on 107 cases who had esophagogram with its indication.
Thirty four cases among these were thought to havE~ chronic liver disease with evidence of portal hypertension clinically. This study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of esophagogram and. esophagofiberscopy for the varices and to correlate i1; with some of clinical data in these 34 chronic liver disease cases, and the results obtained were .as follows:
1) With esophagofiberscope esophageal varices were seen in 24 cases(70.6%) and esophagogram demonstrated esophageal varices in only 65% of these 24 cases. _
2) The patient who had chronic liver disease with eso~~hageal varices showed splenomegaly in 41.6 % of cases while those without esophageal varices in only 20% of cases.
3) There was no differences in ordinary liver chemistry and physical findings between the cases with and without esophageal varices.
